Godzilla Week — The Nerds List Daily Episode 3

It is Tuesday, November 3, and The Nerds List Daily is celebrating Godzilla Day — hosted by Geeked, in ten minutes every morning.

Episode 3, "Godzilla Week," is live now. Today is the anniversary of the day the original Godzilla first stomped into theaters in Japan in 1954, and this year the date is more than a milestone: a brand-new Godzilla movie is hitting IMAX screens today, a classic Godzilla game is back on modern consoles today, and the biggest Godzilla week in years is officially underway.

First, the movie: Godzilla Minus Zero, the sequel to the Academy Award-winning Godzilla Minus One. Director Takashi Yamazaki returns as writer, director, and visual effects supervisor, with Ryunosuke Kamiki back as Koichi Shikishima and Minami Hamabe back as Noriko. Set in 1949, two years after Minus One, it follows the Shikishima family as a country barely back on its feet faces an all-new calamity. The official synopsis sets the stakes plainly: there is no third time — everything ends here. Geeked is careful with the online speculation about what that new threat is: Toho and GKIDS have not officially named it, so treat the confident guesses as rumor for now.

Here is how to see it: today, November 3, Minus Zero opens in IMAX for a special Godzilla Day early access event in North America, and it opens in theaters in Japan today. Then on Friday, November 6, it rolls out nationwide in North America in standard and premium formats through GKIDS, with tickets already on sale. It is the first Japanese production ever to carry the Filmed for IMAX certification, shot entirely on IMAX-certified digital cameras — so the early access screening today is the version the filmmakers built the movie for. The film, rated R for some violent content and bloody images, premiered at the New York Film Festival on September 26, and early reactions have described it as a brutal kaiju brawl.

Then, the game: Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered is out today, November 3. Pipeworks Studios, the original developer, has rebuilt the 2002 GameCube classic from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5, with Atari publishing. It launches on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC through Steam for $29.99, with 12 playable kaiju including the Showa-era Mechagodzilla, eight locations with daytime and nighttime variations, local multiplayer for up to four players, and online matches. The spirit is unchanged: pick a giant monster, drop into a city, and flatten everything while a friend playing another monster tries to flatten you.

Geeked's plan for the week: play Melee Remastered to get in the kaiju mood, watch Minus One first if you have not seen it — Minus Zero is a direct continuation — and see Minus Zero on the biggest screen you can find on Friday. If you are waiting until Friday, dodge spoilers from the early access crowd in the meantime. And for a full Godzilla Day, tonight is the perfect night to go back to the 1954 original.
