Tomorrow, the King stomps back onto the big screen — and this time, he is not coming alone. Godzilla Minus Zero opens in theaters across North America on Friday, November 6, 2026, and if the early buzz is anything to go by, this is the kaiju event of the year.
Director Takashi Yamazaki returns to write, direct, and supervise the visual effects, picking up the story exactly where his Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One left off. That 2023 film did something almost nobody expected: it grossed more than $100 million worldwide and took home the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, proving that a giant monster movie could also be a deeply human story. Now the sequel aims even higher.
Set in 1949, two years after Godzilla's devastating attack on Ginza, Minus Zero follows the Shikishima family as they try to rebuild a life in a country still picking up the pieces. Ryunosuke Kamiki returns as former kamikaze pilot Koichi Shikishima, with Minami Hamabe back as Noriko and Sae Nagatani as their young daughter Akiko. But peace does not last long in a Godzilla movie — and this time the threat is doubled. The film brings the three-headed King Ghidorah into the fray, setting up a clash of titans that fans have been dreaming about for decades.
Here is what you need to know before you grab tickets:
- Runtime: 135 minutes (2 hours, 15 minutes) of monster mayhem.
- Format: Filmed for IMAX, so the biggest screen you can find is the way to see it.
- Rating: Rated R in the US for violent content and bloody images — this one does not pull its punches.
- Legacy: The 34th Japanese-language Godzilla film, and a direct sequel to one of the most acclaimed entries in the franchise's 70-plus-year history.
Early tracking points to a potentially record-breaking opening weekend for the franchise, and honestly, it makes sense. Minus One reminded the world that Godzilla works best when the monster is terrifying and the people on the ground matter. Yamazaki understood that assignment then, and everything we have seen suggests he understood it again.
So clear your Friday night, grab the biggest popcorn they sell, and get to the theater early. The King is back, the sky is falling, and the roar is about to shake the seats. We will see you at the movies.
