EA Just Rescued 25 PC Classics — Road Rash and Wing Commander Are Back on Steam

Sometimes the best gaming news is not about the future — it is about the past finally getting the respect it deserves. Electronic Arts just opened its vault and brought 25 classic PC games back to life, launching them on Steam for the first time on November 5, 2026, alongside GOG and the EA App. And this is not a lazy re-upload job. Seven of these legends have been lovingly rebuilt as Anniversary Editions, with cinematics recovered from the original master tapes.

The headliners are pure nostalgia fuel. Road Rash returns as a 30th Anniversary Edition, bringing back the motorcycle combat racer where winning the race was only half the battle — the other half was surviving your rivals' fists, boots, and chains at 150 miles per hour. Joining it are six Wing Commander titles, including the original game and Vengeance of the Kilrathi in 35th Anniversary Editions, plus Heart of the Tiger, The Price of Freedom, Prophecy, and Privateer 2: The Darkening in 30th Anniversary Editions. For a generation of PC gamers, Wing Commander was not just a game — it was the reason to own a joystick.

The restoration story is almost as good as the games. The project began in March 2022, when EA senior producer Jim Vessella discovered a vast physical media vault at the company's Redwood Shores campus. The team dug through thousands of tapes and recovered more than 1,500 cinematic scenes from the original masters, restoring the full-motion video that made these games feel like playable movies in the nineties.

The Anniversary Editions are built for modern machines, with native Windows 10 and 11 support, widescreen 16:9 resolutions, quick save and quick load, controller support, new soundtracks, and a stack of quality-of-life upgrades. They are priced at $9.99 each, while the other 18 classics cost $4.99 each, with special launch pricing on Steam and GOG running through November 19.

And that remaining eighteen is no filler list. It includes the Ultima series, both Crusader games, Theme Hospital, Strike Commander, and Wing Commander: Privateer — a crash course in PC gaming history for less than the price of a movie ticket. Even better, if you already own a Wing Commander game digitally on GOG or the EA App, the matching Anniversary Edition upgrade is free.

Game preservation matters because games disappear. Formats die, disks rot, and storefronts close. EA digging into its own archive to rescue these titles is exactly the kind of move the industry needs more of — and if this collection sells, maybe other publishers will raid their vaults too. Dust off that joystick, clear some hard drive space, and go punch a rival rider off his bike. The nineties are calling, and this time they run at modern resolutions.
