Grab your guitar and warm up those fingers, because Bocchi the Rock! is heading to the big screen! Announced today, November 1, 2026, the beloved band anime is getting a brand-new feature film: Bocchi the Rock! Hoshi no Ashiato, set to debut across Japan sometime in 2027.
Here is the twist that has fans buzzing: this is not a sequel, it is a prequel. The film follows Nijika Ichiji as she travels together with her older sister Seika, giving us a look at Nijika's life before the events of the main series. The story adapts a special bonus chapter from Aki Hamazi's original manga, so longtime readers may already have a hint of where this road trip is headed, but seeing it animated on the big screen is a whole different feeling.
The announcement came with a first teaser trailer and visual, and the staff lineup is stacked with returning talent:
- Director: Shin Wakabayashi, for returning studio CloverWorks
- Screenplay: Erika Yoshida, returning from the TV series
- Character designs: Yukiko Horiguchi
- Sound director: Akiko Fujita
That is a dream team for anyone who fell in love with the show's mix of anxious comedy, heartfelt friendship, and absolutely shredding guitar work. CloverWorks captured lightning in a bottle with the first season, and having so much of that crew back for the film is exactly what we wanted to hear.
Now, a few honest caveats before you start booking flights to Tokyo. As of the announcement, the film has no concrete release date or window within 2027 yet, and there is no confirmed international release or official English-language title so far. Those details will likely follow after the Japanese debut, so keep your expectations set to "patiently hyped" rather than "buying tickets tomorrow."
And if you are wondering about Season 2, good news: it is still very much in the works. CloverWorks producer Shouta Umehara shared that production is underway, with the script and storyboards reaching their final stages and animation progressing steadily. The team simply decided to announce the movie first, and honestly, we are not complaining.
It has been five years since Bocchi the Rock! debuted in 2022 and became one of the most popular new anime of that year. A prequel movie about Nijika and Seika, plus a second season on the horizon? The band is getting back together, and we could not be more ready. If you need a refresher before the film arrives, the debut season is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
Are you ready for Bocchi's big-screen comeback? Let us know what you are hoping to see in the prequel!
