Pendulum Trailer Drops: Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Norman Reedus Lead a Nightmare New Year's Day Horror

Just in time for Halloween weekend, a new nightmare has swung into view. The trailer for Pendulum, a psychological horror film starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Norman Reedus, dropped today, October 29, 2026, and it is exactly the kind of unsettling, slow-burn dread that sticks with you long after the lights come back on.

Written and directed by Mark Heyman, Pendulum follows Patrick (Gordon-Levitt) and Abigail (Phoebe Dynevor), a couple reeling from a shared tragedy. Desperate for healing, they travel to a secluded new-age retreat in New Mexico — and that is where things start to go very, very wrong. As Abigail falls deeper under the spell of the group's charismatic leader, Patrick begins to fear he is losing his wife to a cult… or losing his grip on reality altogether.

The trailer wastes no time getting under your skin. It opens on Patrick climbing the stairs toward Abigail, seated in a rocking chair in what appears to be their deceased newborn's bedroom, before cutting to the couple embracing as a voice asks, "What if you could heal your wife? Wouldn't you be willing to try anything?" From there, the footage spirals into ritual gatherings and whispered doctrine: "There is no such thing as death. The circle has no end."

That central question — cult, or madness? — is what makes Pendulum so tantalizing. The trailer refuses to answer it, and honestly, we hope the film keeps us guessing just as long. Gordon-Levitt has always excelled at playing men quietly coming apart at the seams, and Dynevor's turn as a wife slipping toward something she may not be able to come back from looks genuinely chilling.

The supporting cast is stacked, too:

  • Norman Reedus, in a role that has not yet been disclosed — which only makes us more curious
  • Anna Deavere Smith, Jena Malone, and Jacki Weaver rounding out the ensemble
  • Darren Aronofsky among the producers, alongside Heyman, Jacob Jaffke, Élan Klein Jaffke, Will Greenfield, and Dave Caplan

With Aronofsky producing, expect the psychological horror to hit as hard as the supernatural scares. This is a film about grief first and a cult thriller second — where the best horror usually lives.

Here is the best part for your calendar: Pendulum hits theaters on January 1, 2027. A horror movie opening on New Year's Day is a bold swing, and a perfect way to kick off the new year — preferably with the lights on and someone to hold onto afterward. Watch the trailer, then tell us: do you think Patrick is fighting a cult, or his own mind? We have a feeling this is one debate that will run all the way to opening night.
