Halloween is less than a week away, and there is no better way to celebrate the spooky season than with a marathon of the scariest, weirdest, and most gloriously eerie anime ever made. Whether you want pure nightmare fuel or something spooky-but-fun to watch with friends, this list has you covered. Grab your candy, dim the lights, and press play — if you dare.
Another (2012, 12 episodes + OVA) — If you only watch one horror anime this Halloween, make it this one. Produced by P.A. Works and based on Yukito Ayatsuji's 2009 novel, Another follows transfer student Kouichi Sakakibara as he joins Class 3-3 at Yomiyama North Middle School and meets the mysterious eyepatch-wearing Mei Misaki. A decades-old curse hangs over the class, and students keep meeting gruesome fates. It is a slow-burn mystery with a killer payoff, and it is still one of the best horror anime ever made.
Soul Eater (2008–2009, 51 episodes) — The most Halloween-coded anime in existence. Studio Bones' stylish dark fantasy follows Maka Albarn and her weapon partner Soul Eater, students at the Death Weapon Meister Academy, where they hunt evil souls and witches under the watchful eye of Lord Death himself. Pumpkins, skulls, witches, and a grim reaper headmaster — this show is October.
Mieruko-chan (2021, 12 episodes) — The perfect pick if you want scares with a side of laughs. Studio Passione's horror-comedy follows high schooler Miko Yotsuya, who can see horrifying ghosts that nobody else can — and deals with it by pretending they are not there. The ghost designs are genuinely creepy, the comedy lands, and Miko's iron poker face is legendary.
Higurashi: When They Cry (2006–2007, 50 episodes) — Studio Deen's adaptation of the beloved visual novels drops you in the rural village of Hinamizawa, where a summer festival coincides with annual disappearances and deaths. Time loops, unreliable memories, and a mystery that only gets deeper with every reset. This one will live in your head rent-free long after Halloween ends.
Parasyte -the maxim- (2014–2015, 24 episodes) — Madhouse's body-horror classic follows Shinichi Izumi after a parasite fails to take over his brain and instead fuses with his right hand. Equal parts gruesome and thoughtful, it asks what really separates humans from monsters — and it does it with some of the most unsettling transformation scenes in anime.
Devilman Crybaby (2018, 10 episodes) — Science SARU's wild reimagining of Go Nagai's classic is a sprint: ten episodes of escalating demonic chaos, heartbreak, and jaw-dropping animation. Fair warning — this one goes hard. Save it for last, when the candy is gone and the lights are fully off.
That is our Halloween watchlist, nerds. Which of these are you queuing up first — and what spooky anime did we miss? Drop your picks in the comments and happy haunting!
