Akane-banashi Season 2 Drops First Teaser — The Zenza Arc Begins January 2027

The stage lights are warming up — Akane-banashi Season 2 is officially on its way, and we finally have our first real look at it. During a special TV Asahi livestream on October 25, the rakugo drama revealed a brand-new teaser trailer, a gorgeous key visual, and a wave of new cast members, all ahead of its January 2027 premiere.

If you missed Season 1, here is the quick version: Akane-banashi follows Akane Osaki, a girl chasing her father's dream of becoming a shin'uchi — a master of rakugo, the traditional Japanese art of seated storytelling where one performer, armed with nothing but a fan and a hand towel, brings an entire cast of characters to life. Season 1 ran from April to June 2026, and it ended with Akane graduating high school and formally joining the school of master storyteller Shiguma Arakawa.

Season 2 picks up exactly there. Now performing under the name Akane Arakawa, she arrives at Yasaka-tei, a traditional rakugo theater, and begins her real training surrounded by the art form's top-ranked performers. TV Asahi calls this stretch of the story The Zenza Arc — zenza being the opening act of a rakugo program — and the teaser promises a full-fledged story of master storytellers competing at the heart of the rakugo world.

The October 25 reveal also expanded the cast in a big way. Two brand-new characters join the story: Taku Yashiro as Asagao Konjakutei and Yoji Ueda as Hassho Tsubakiya. The announcement also confirmed the voices for six characters who first appeared in Season 1's finale:

  • Hochu Otsuka as Miroku Kashiwaya
  • Ryotaro Okiayu as Shomei Tsubakiya
  • Hiroshi Naka as Enso Sanmeitei
  • Mutsumi Tamura as Urara Ransaika
  • Shinichiro Miki as Ryu'un Kenputei
  • Tomokazu Seki as Chocho Konjakutei

They join the returning cast led by Anna Nagase as Akane, with director Ayumu Watanabe and studio ZEXCS back behind the scenes. The series adapts the manga by writer Yuki Suenaga and artist Takamasa Moue, serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump since February 2022.

No exact premiere date has been announced yet — just the January 2027 window — so consider this your cue to catch up on Season 1 before the curtain rises again. A show about the power of a single voice telling a story, told with this much heart, deserves a full house. We will be in the front row.
